San Chun Summons Dad:A traditional play, one of the popular plays in late Qing Dynasty, the prima play for Xiao Lixiang (young female character type in Chinese opera) Charm Ji (young male character type in Chinese opera) in late Qing Dynasty and the early stage of the foundation of the Republic of China.
Tao Sanchun, the heroine in the story, suffers from the maltreatment of her stepmother, who speaks ill of her to Tao Guorui(her father) . So her father forces her to submit suicide. Sanchun attempts to drown herself in the river but is saved by others. After that, she is dressed as a man and then becomes the No. 1 Scholar. Later, Tao Guorui offends some treacherous court officials, who frame him in jail. Now Sanchun gets the orders to summon her dad, and revenges the wrong for him. When they admit each other, Sanchun uncovers the truth, and they both forgive and forget.
At the beginning of the foundation of the People's Republic of China, this play was put on by such Cantonese Opera troupes in Guangzhou as the Excel Longevity Troupe, Wan Fang Hong Troupe, Peacock Troupe and Diamond Troupe. In the fall of 1952, Luo Pinchao, Shao Kunlun, Lang Junyu, Chan Gongnv, Wen Shaofei and Wen Juefei from the Zhujiang Cantonese Opera Troupe formed the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Troupe with the artists from some other troupes to participate in the Central South Opera Joint Performance. The Guangdong Art Academy has collected both its old script and its revision after the foundation of the People's Republic of China.
