The facial make-up of the Cantonese Opera, also called facial sketch or facial notch, is often used for painted faces and clowns. Facial sketch is a special makeup art to sketch out the character and facial features of the character with high-sounding lines, bright colors and symbolistic patterns. The facial make-up of the early Cantonese Opera adopted simple patterns generally in black-and-white in simple sketch. Later, influenced by the external troupes, it became complicated gradually. However, the Black-and-white facial make-up is still used by the opera artists as the basic color for the Cantonese Opera. It generally adopts the brush wash, namely smear the border between patterns during the facial sketch, so as to add a gray transitional color layer between black and white to add to the 3D effect.
With reference to the classification of the facial make-up of the Cantonese Opera, the early facial make-up was made up of the Whole Face, Painted Face, Trichromic (red, black and white) Face, bright-colored Five-color Face and immortal-like Gold-silver Face in terms of profession. The facial make-up of the Cantonese Opera in West Guangdong Area (Four Subordinate Areas) consists of the Big Face and Small Face, whose patterns are often colorful and related to the history, encounters and moral character of the character in the opera, so as to highlight the characterization.
