The Cantonese Opera Movie refers to the movie combining the Cantonese Opera with the cinematic device. So it still looks like stage Cantonese Opera in many ways. There were totally 1092 Cantonese Opera Movies produced and showed to the public in Hong Kong from 1913 to 1990, outnumbering any other play movies abroad.
From 1930s'to 1960s', Cantonese Opera Movie was flourishing both in the Cantonese areas and nationwide for about half a century. In the 1950s, totally 515 Cantonese Opera Movies were produced in Hong Kong, including 89 ones in 1958, which brought Hong Kong to the summit of Cantonese Opera Movies production in number. The Mainland China also produced such excellent Cantonese Opera Movies as ‘Guan Hanqin', ‘ Searching the College' and ‘Lee Xiangjun' just after liberation. The Cantonese Opera Movie began to decline in 1960s. There were only 3 ones produced in 1970s. Shown in 1990, the movie entitled ‘Lee Xiangjun' is the last Cantonese Opera Movie up to now. There are over 800 Cantonese Opera Movies going on till now, over 300 of which are collected in our museum. Cantonese Opera Movie plays an important role in keeping and spreading the Cantonese Opera.
