The Cantonese Opera is of large number of plays and extensive themes. In addition to the common plays with other vocal dramas, the early Cantonese Opera also covered some local plays and plenty of ˇ®Syllabus Plays' combining stellar cast with drama. Some plays come down in hand-written copies, while most are unavailable with scripts but transferred orally and by action by artists. From Mid Qing Dynasty, some studios began to print and sell skits. After the Revolution of 1911, a large number of intellectuals set foot in the Traditional Chinese Opera Culture. Then Cantonese Opera began to have professional playwrights. From the patriot troupe stage to the GD-HK troupe stage, a lot of plays were created, and scripts came to be standardized in terms of actor's lines, performance and dance hints. At that time, there were even some stores specializing in the production of inkpad scripts, which was inherited till after 1960 as a characteristic of Cantonese Opera scripts. After the foundation of the People's Republic of China, a lot of ideologically and artistically high-end works were created with the sharp development of the playwright team of Cantonese Opera.
In the long history, a great amount of adaptation and creation from different subject matters at home and abroad at all times has lead to today's large number of plays and rich and colorful content. The 11360 plays collected today show that the Cantonese Opera is one of those with the maximum plays in the world.
